[here they are in the convenience store... well, specifically, waner doesn't know he's here yet. she's wearing real clothes again, browsing the unfamiliar items on the shelves... and then she pauses when she spots something.
[waner, who makes a habit of walking in the garden, notices the change in the apple tree fairly early on in the morning.
so, of course, she walks into the garden to take a closer look. she approaches the tree, her eyes on the fruit, and then pauses - her eyes going wide as that intuitive understanding of what these fruits are and what picking one would mean floods her.
she's left standing there for a few long moments before she hears footsteps, and she whirls toward them, her expression strained.]
[ help, the way i completely missed the apple info until i ctrl+f'd 'garden' bc of this tag
thanks for introducing me to a basic game mechanic i guess
he's staring at her in confusion at first because like, what, have you never seen an apple before either? but as he comes closer, he understands. and he bristles in shock. ]
[ brimstone had been watching neverah's arrival, waner's confrontation, from afar. but now that it's over and waner is on her own, it's time to stop watching. ]
[waner has been trying her level best to avoid reflective surfaces this week, but, well. brimstone already knows she's a horrible person, so maybe she lets her guard down.
(or maybe she's just too tired to avoid it after their jogging sessions.)
in any case, they pass a reflective surface, and suddenly a memory (cw: miscarriage) begins. waner isn't able to stop it; she watches it as it plays out, evaluating what she may or may not need to explain.]
...to be rid of Jiuqing, or her mother, or both of them. [she looks down at her hands.] My father had sworn for so many years that he would marry my mother, but he never did. Because of the two of them.
[her voice is tiny when she speaks again.]
Mother said that it would work. She would pretend to be pregnant, and it would look like they were scheming against his heir. Jiuqing's mother had never given him a son to carry on the family name, after all. She told me to bump into her so we both fell down... I didn't know she actually was pregnant.
anyway we are here at the fair! brimstone is playing at a booth where he's shooting darts out of a crossbow at targets...and failing miserably. he is getting increasingly irate and increasingly bad at aiming. ]
[ after minievent he is in the new arts and crafts store! he is just standing in the middle of it, arms crossed, glaring at the whole thing like a seething monument to hate. ]
anyway, waner is here to look at some of the fabrics and threads, but when she spots him she wanders over, pulls something out of her sleeve, and tosses it at him.
it's a black handkerchief with a pattern embroidered in the corner.]

No, so you can show everyone you're not some pushover who tolerates getting turned into swiss cheese.
If anyone buys her little crying act, then they're idiots. They're too stupid to consider their opinions worthwhile.
